The latest carbon neutrality industry news
SAN FRANCISCO - March 4, 2026 - Carbonfuture today announced a multi-year agreement with Boeing [NYSE: BA], for at least 40,000 tonnes of durable carbon dioxide removal credits, one of the aviation sector’s largest procurements of high-durability CDR for emissions that cannot be eliminated through efficiency and fuel innovation alone.
Carbonfuture will supply a diversified portfolio initially sourced from four biochar carbon removal projects across the Global South. Biochar is charcoal made from organic material that is added to soil to improve fertility and sequester carbon. The portfolio is de-risked by Carbonfuture’s digital Trust Infrastructure, which ensures precise tracking of both the carbon removed – from biochar production to end use – and the associated legal title. Through this structure, Boeing gains access to rigorously vetted, durable removals to complement its multi-faceted strategy to enable responsible growth. There is an option to purchase additional credits via the framework agreement.
“To support long-term global demand for air travel, the aviation industry has set goals to reduce emissions,” said Allison Melia, vice president, Global Enterprise Sustainability, Boeing. “We’re excited to team up with Carbonfuture to support technological innovation in carbon removals to help meet these needs.”
Durable CDR addresses emissions that will remain even after other measures are taken, including designing and building a new generation of fuel-efficient airplanes; collaborating to improve operational efficiency; and investing and partnering across industry to increase the supply of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
This agreement supports the quality of the voluntary carbon removal market, alongside existing international frameworks, including the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA).
Under the agreement, Boeing will apply carbon removal credits to address its residual Scope 3 – category 6 emissions associated with business travel. Carbonfuture's integrated portfolio management capabilities enable Boeing to manage, allocate, and transparently track credits across multiple use cases through a single platform.
"By structuring a diversified, high-durability portfolio and providing the infrastructure to manage it with full transparency, we are enabling Boeing to address hard-to-abate emissions," said Hannes Junginger-Gestrich, CEO of Carbonfuture. “We are proud to partner with leaders like Boeing to support the growth of the durable carbon removal sector."
